La Hoyola – La Jagua, Colombia

Five-day hike and paddle expedition inspired by the Wade Davis book titled Magdalena. From La Hoyola, we hiked to the source of the Magdalena river in the Páramo de las Papas and followed it by foot to San Agustín where we jumped in our packrafts and paddled to the first dam at La Jagua.

Day 1: La Hoyola – San Antonio

Highlight: Fog lifting from the paramo as we summitted the mirador, revealing views of the Laguna Santiago and Laguna de la Magdalena. Descending from the paramo into the valley as the Magdalena took form from a babbling brook, to a running stream, and eventually becoming a fully formed river. Arriving to San Antonio in time to soak up sun and dry my feet and socks atop a large rock in the middle of the river.
